The Barbican Centre Trust has entered into a 3-year agreement with New Regents College, which is a Pupil Referral Unit in Hoxton. The programme aims to enable at-risk learners to access the curriculum through arts participation, while building self-esteem and communication skills. It directly benefits around 35 pupils, in addition to teachers, family members and carers.

For young people unable to access education within the mainstream classroom, especially in settings where pupils may have difficulties succeeding in ‘core’ subjects, the arts can help facilitate a young person’s understanding and expression of their thoughts in what is often a challenging and demoralising situation. Creative activities are particularly successful in aiding personal development and in increasing a young person’s confidence to prepare them for mainstream school or for the next stage of their life. Partnerships with organisations like the Barbican can crucially support pupils and enrich their experience in a Pupil Referral Unit, particularly for the many PRUs which have limited specialist facilities of their own.

Tom’s Trust has given the Barbican Centre Trust a grant to help support this valuable programme.
